At present, the remediation technology of chromium contaminated soil is mainly based on the reduction and stabilization principle of hexavalent chromium, including chemical reduction, chemical leaching, electrokinetic remediation and bioremediation technology.

The chromium in soil is mostly derived from human pollution. It mainly comes from the leakage during the production and use of hexavalent chromium compounds, including chromium salt production, tanning, electroplating, wood preservation and other industries. The discharge of chromium, a pollutant caused by human activities, into the soil constitutes the main chromium pollution site in China. According to the causes of pollution, it can be roughly divided into the following categories:

1) The leakage of hexavalent chromium during the production process of chromium chemical enterprises leads to soil pollution, especially in leaching workshops, acidification crystallization workshops, etc. According to preliminary statistics, there are about 20 contaminated sites left behind by Chinese chromium chemical enterprises after their closure.

2) Inadequate implementation of anti-seepage and rainproof measures in the chromium slag storage yard has led to soil pollution in the site. According to preliminary statistics, there are over 40 contaminated sites caused by chromium slag stacking in China.

3) Pollution of the electroplating enterprise's site caused by leakage of the electroplating pool. In recent years, newly established electroplating enterprises have adopted the method of high-altitude electroplating production to avoid the problem of electroplating pool leakage and pollution. However, there are tens of thousands of old electroplating enterprises nationwide, and incomplete statistics indicate that chromium pollution caused by electroplating production is likely to reach thousands of plots.

4) Site pollution caused by the production process of old tannery enterprises and tannery sludge storage yards. According to incomplete statistics, there are thousands of old tannery sites with pollution risks.

At present, the remediation technology of chromium contaminated soil is mainly based on the reduction and stabilization principle of hexavalent chromium, including chemical reduction, chemical leaching, electrokinetic remediation and bioremediation technology.
