Oily sludge is a solid or semi-solid waste containing mineral oil generated during oil and gas drilling, oil production, gathering and transportation, oil processing and oily wastewater treatment. It is divided into oily drill cuttings, abandoned oily drilling mud, ground oil sludge, oil tank sludge, oily scum, sewage pool or sewage tank sludge, etc. Oily sludge contains many toxic substances, such as benzene series and heavy metals. If it is not properly handled, it will have adverse effects on human health and the ecological environment. Oily sludge is a complex mixture, mainly containing oil-in-water emulsion, water-in-oil emulsion, solid suspension, etc. The density of oil and water in oily sludge is similar, the solid particles are small, the particles are generally negatively charged, and one or more layers of water are attached to the surface of the particles. The negative charge and hydration of the particles make most of the particles repel each other, making the oily sludge a stable dispersion system, which makes it difficult to separate oil and water. Oily sludge mainly accumulates in the surface soil, generally concentrated in the range of 20~30 cm below the surface, and rapidly decreases exponentially in the depth. More than 90% of petroleum pollutants remain in the soil layer above 10 cm.
There are many methods for treating and disposing oily sludge. Chemical hot washing has become one of the earliest and most widely used technologies due to its advantages of low investment, low treatment cost, high oil recovery rate and large treatment volume. The basic principle of chemical hot washing is to use a cleaning agent to strip, desorb, displace mineral oil from solid substances such as clay minerals under the optimal process parameters, or destroy the emulsification system to achieve oil, water and solid three-phase separation.
